AFRICA

In 1969-70 as Costa Mesa was getting going a former Scottish rider Alex Hughson started three tracks from scratch in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). Bulawayo, Gwelo and Salisbury. The first meeting at Salisbury attracted over 16,000 people. 25 meetings in 59 days on 3 tracks 300 miles apart with 12 riders in front of over 200,000 people!
Program covers and some match results can be found here.

The Bulawayo Showgrounds track wasn't as square when speedway ran there.

The track at Gwelo didn't last long due to Gwelo being a small town. This track was right in the middle between Bulawayo and Salisbury. The Stadium was built out of the ashes of a run down horse track called Newmarket. At this time all I know was it was south of town and probably nothing remains.

Glamis Stadium in Salisbury was the main Rhodesian venue. Nice stadium, great track and in a big city.

So what has this to do with American Speedway. Well due to the successful venture in Rhodesia Alex Hughson ventured south to South Africa where he hooked up with Buddy Fuller. Fuller converted three of his car tracks to suit speedway and invited a four man American team to tour. Scott Autrey, Rick Woods, Mike Caruso and Sumner McKnight. It was a wild success.

The three tracks were Wembley in Johannesburg, nearby Dunswart Arena in Benoni and on the coast the small American style Alan Ford Stadium in Durban.

Dunswart Arena

Not sure where the Alan Ford Stadium was in this park if at all. It was around here somewhere.
